![]() I'm not in to collector stuff all that much. ![]() MAybe it's a special Win ser# that means something I've not heard of. On that date, the Model 90 serial range had reached 713199. Maybe someone put their own # on it after a refinish. Specifically, Ned only listed the Model 90 serial number up to the point when the Model 06 was discontinued (March 10th, 1926). and also make use of a coil mainspring instead of the Winchester flat mainspring of the 90. Many aftermarket conversions to pistol grip use other methods of attaching the tang screw. This made for a flat surface for the extra long tang screw to screw into after the stud was blind drilled and tapped. That angle on the end of the stud made it parallel with the top tang. ![]() On the inside that stud was machined at an angle to it's body up very close to the inner face of the tang surface. Many are very hard to see because of the close fit in the metal. This stud was polished smooth and to the contour of the lower tang when fitted. This where the tang screw would normally screw in to. Winchester used a stud inserted & press fit into the lower tang with a large 'head' on the outside. The Model 1906 (which used the exact same receiver, but with different internal parts) had a B marked below the serial number. It's not hard to make a pistol grip 1890 or Model 62, but it does involve working over that lower tang with some force and metal working tools.Ī few things to look for if you take the stock off. Tony, It means that it is a post 1907 production Model 1890 receiver. As I say, w/o pics or seeing it first hand,it could be an orig PG 1890 w/an aftermarket stock. The lower tang was modified to a pistol grip and in doing so the ser# on that lower tang was lost in the heating, bending, recontouring and refinishing of the tang to a pistol grip form.īut that's just my first thought. Being a pistol grip 1890 w/an aftermarket butt stock, and not having a ser# on the lower tang,my first thought (not seeing a picture) is that the gun was orig a straight grip rifle.
